Balaam was a soothsayer who was hired by Moab to curse Israel, yet who prayed to
YHWH and was told to bless Israel instead (Numbers 22 and 23). On his way to
Moab the angel of YHWH stood in his way to oppose him and Balaam and his
companions had a "Road to Moab" experience. In this experience Balaam found out
he was unjustly persecuting his donkey and said "I have sinned." Balaam ended up
blessing Israel several times to the dismay of those who had hired him.
However, the next time we hear of Balaam, he is slain with the Midianites (Numbers
31:8). We find out why later in the chapter. Behold,
these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit
trespass against YHWH in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the
congregation of YHWH. Balaam was converted and blessed, yet fell away and caused
the children of Israel "to commit trespass against YHWH" (Numbers 31:16).
We have to go to the New Testament to find out more specifically what sins were involved.
Balaam is referred to in 2 Peter, Jude and Revelation. The verse with the most
information is in Revelation.
Rev 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that
hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before
the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit
fornication.
Who in the NT could Messiah have been warning against that would be a type of
Balaam? Paul unjustly persecuted Messiah, had a conversion experience on the
Road to Damascus, and initially spoke the words of YHWH. We need to take this
parallel further and see that Paul made statements to the effect that
fornication and eating food offered to idols are "lawful" to him, yet not
"expedient." This is clearly understood by mainstream Evangelical Christianity.
1Co 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all
things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
1Co 8:7 Howbeit [there is] not in every man that knowledge: for some with
conscience of the idol unto this hour eat [it] as a thing offered unto an idol;
and their conscience being weak is defiled.
1Co 8:8 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the
better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
I fully realize that many who read this know that the Torah is not done away
with and interpret Paul in that manner. However, I am saying that as Paul came
with signs and wonders, we are not to automatically accept him! What I see
happening is that many accept Paul's Gospel and reject the words of Messiah.
Deu 13:1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth
thee a sign or a wonder,
Deu 13:2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee,
saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve
them;
Deu 13:3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer
of dreams: for YHWH your God proveth you, to know whether ye love YHWH your God
with all your heart and with all your soul.
Mat 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall
shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall
deceive the very elect.
Rom 15:19 Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God;
so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached
the gospel of Christ.
