Sign of Jonah: Revisited

An Alternate Chronology of the Events Leading to Messiah's Death/Resurrection

Carl Felland, Ph.D.

Preconceived notions often make it difficult to see what later becomes obvious.  Take the Sign of Jonah.

Jon 1:17 Now YHWH had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Mat 12:38 Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, Teacher, we would see a sign from thee.
Mat 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet:
Mat 12:40 for as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

This passage has been understood in several different ways.  "Heart of the earth" is assumed by many to equal "grave."  "Three days and three nights" is assumed by others to equal 72 hours beginning at sundown or dark and by yet others to be three light and dark periods in any order.  Still others understand a day/year relationship and that this refers to Messiah's three year ministry.

I've wrestled with this passage and have been challenged over the years with what does "heart of the earth" refer to and shouldn't this be a literal 72 hour period beginning with day.  Reexamining the Creation Calendar versus the Jewish and Gregorian calendars has allowed me to see that the 15th is always a weekly Sabbath.  Reexamining days as dawn to dusk rather than dark to dark has allowed me to reinterpret Bible passages dealing with the Biblical feasts such as Passover.  In this article I look at "heart of the earth" as related to Jerusalem and reexamine the period that Messiah was examined under Pilate's custody.

My goal in revisiting the Sign of Jonah is to reexamine the chronology within the last two weeks prior to Messiah's crucifixion.  I do this by arranging the Gospel passages from this period in parallel columns and aligning the events.  I then set up a calendar of this period.  Next, I examine 1. Are the accounts of the anointing real time events?  2. Was it a single entry or multiple entries?  3. Significance of Abib 10 and  4. Details of the events that occurred when Messiah was being held in Pilate's custody, and then present my conclusions.
